MRI is Magnetic Resonance Imaging that uses magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the organs and tissues within one’s body. Unlike X-rays and Computed Tomographic (CT) scans, MRI is a safe non-invasive imaging method that does not involve X-ray radiation. An MRI scan is superior to the Computed Tomography (CT) scan in depicting the soft tissue detail.

The 3.0-Tesla (Tesla – standard MR strength measure) MR Scanner at Sime Darby Medical Centre Subang Jaya features new technology encompassing magnet, gradient, radio-frequency, integrated body coil and superior data acquisition system advancements which provide enhanced performance. Clinical benefits include a spectacular signal-to-noise ratio and image detail, which enable clinicians to see anatomical structures and details that are simply not visible at lower field strengths (Tesla).
The 3.0T MR scanner comes with an Ambient Experience Suite which focuses on the patient’s comfort and putting him or her at ease. Compared to lower field strength MR scanners, the 3.0T MR scanner provides the high speed and resolution clinicians need to quickly and accurately assess results, reducing the need for re-scanning. The 3.0T allows clinicians to conduct routine to advanced imaging across all clinical applications on a system that is as comfortable, compact and easy-to-use as a 1.5T.
The detailed imaging enables radiologists and physicians to provide patients with early diagnosis of a host of medical conditions, including brain and neurological disorders, musculoskeletal system diseases and organ disease. The 3.0T MRI is also able to characterize more subtle abnormalities such as heterotopic grey matter associated with developmental problem in patients with seizures.
To topA large cylindrical-shaped tube encompassed by a circular magnet and a moveable attached bed which slides into the cylinder for the scan process.

The Ambient Experience 3.0T MRI Suite revolutionises the manner in which patients receive care by creating hospital environments that are reassuring, comforting and soothing for patients. Patients can personalize the lighting, projected images and other elements of the suite, giving them a greater sense of comfort and control over their experience. By using a tablet PC to choose the theme before entering the suite, patients select soothing images to be projected on the walls and ceiling accompanied by corresponding sounds, such as an underwater seascape or mountain scene complete with migrating geese.

The patient lies on a bed support that is motioned through the cylindrical magnetic tunnel where the scanning takes place. The magnetic field temporarily aligns all the water molecules in the body and when radio waves are directed to the areas of study, these aligned water molecules will change position thus producing signals; a computer system then processes these signals and creates cross-sectional images.
To topAn MRI scan is usually prescribed when there is a need to either diagnose, or monitor treatment for conditions such as tumours, abnormalities of brain, abdominal organs which include the liver, spleen, pancreas and kidney, pelvic abnormalities, which include the female reproductive organs, functional brain mapping for pre-surgical planning, musculo-skeletal abnormalities, arterial and venous vascular anomalies diseases .
To topTypically, a scanned 3.0T MRI image will highlight areas of the body that are affected by any form of abnormalities such as tumours, infection and inflammation. Because of its high magnetic field strength, more detailed image resolution and thinner slices can be acquired, hence allowing a better analysis and depiction of minor changes and early diseases.
To topAn MRI scan process is painless. The patient is however required to remain still for the duration of the scan process which can last between 30-45 minutes. As the patient is motioned into the cylindrical-shaped magnetic tube, there may be instances of some anxiety-prone patients experiencing claustrophobia. However, the scanner is well-lit and is equipped with a two-way intercom system to constantly monitor and communicate with the patient. Should there be a need for the patient to have a dye administered, it is usually done so using the intravenous method. In most cases patients are not sedated and may resume normal activities immediately after. For nursing mothers, it is recommended that they refrain from breast-feeding for 36 to 48 hours after a dye-administered MRI scan.
To topGenerally one does not require extensive preparation such as fasting or abstinence from routine activities unless it is an abdominal scan. The MRI can be done on an out-patient basis. The onus is on the patient to inform the attending radiographer of the possibility of any other disease such as poor kidney function, the possibility of pregnancy or if there are any implants such as a cardiac pacemaker, drug infusion ports, surgical staples, or aneurysm clips to name but a few. Metal and electronic objects that interfere with the magnetic field are strictly prohibited. Certain preparations may be required pertaining to specific examinations. Prior to the scanning, patients will be screened using a Patient MRI Safety Checklist.
To topA 3.0T MRI scan is a safe non-invasive imaging technique that does not involve any radiation. The scan does not expose patients to any risk of ionizing radiation. It is however imperative that appropriate safety guidelines are followed. Sime Darby Medical Centre Subang Jaya, in pioneering the use of the 3.0T MR Scanner is committed in bringing the latest technology and innovation into the practice of modern medicine.
