PETALING JAYA: National track cyclist Azizulhasni Awang and several of his team-mates will take part in a charity ride – Cycling for a Cure 2011 – on Sept 24 to help raise funds for the Sime Darby Foundation Leukaemia Fund.
The others who will take part in the charity ride, which will take place at Dataran Putrajaya, include Josiah Ng, Fatehah Mustapa, Mohd Edrus Yunos, Junaidi Nasir, Mohd Rizal Tisin and Mohd Hafiz.
“We are all looking forward to participating in this event. It’s a chance for us to contribute to the community by supporting the leukaemia fund. We hope this event will also create more awareness towards leukaemia,” said Azizul.
Foundation chief executive officer Yatela Zainal Abidin hoped that cycling enthusiasts around the country would join the national track cyclists on Sept 24.
“We hope that the national cyclists’ participation will encourage the public to come forward to support this cause,” said Yatela, who disclosed that the foundation would match ringgit-for-ringgit the funds raised during the charity event.
Those who are keen to join the national cyclists in the charity ride must pay a participation fee of RM50 and can choose to race either in the 3.3km, 7.7km or the challenging 100.5km route that will pass through various towns in Sepang, Nilai and Putrajaya.
“The 100.5km race is designed specifically for those who enjoy gruelling tasks,” said Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) deputy president Datuk Naim Mohamad.
To register, participants can download the form from www.yayasansimedarby.com.
The registration forms will also be made available at selected bicycle shops in the Klang Valley area.
The Sime Darby Foundation Leukaemia Fund was launched on March 30 by its patron Tun Musa Hitam, who is also the foundation chairman.
The fund is set up to benefit leukaemia patients in Malaysia aged between of 13 and 72 and who are in dire need of bone marrow transplants.
Eligible patients can enjoy subsidised and comprehensive treatment at the Sime Darby Medical Centre’s (SDMC) Blood Diseases Centre in Subang Jaya, Selangor. These can be patients of SDMC or referral cases from other government and private hospitals.
